Geographical Position and
Climate
The
prefecture of Kavala is located between the rivers Nestos and
Strymonas, which are its natural borders. The size of the
prefecture is 2.109 km2 and it borders on the prefecture of
Xanthi (east), the prefecture of Drama (north), and the
prefecture of Serres (west).
It includes administratively, eleven municipalities, with the
biggest one being the municipality of Kavala. The new
municipality of Kavala has an area of 112.599 m2. Kavala is
the capital of the prefecture and it is located on Via Egnatia
and it is two hours drive away from Thessaliniki (160 km). From
the western entrance of the city, anyone faces it lying
amphitheatrically between the hill sides that surrounded it and
the north coast of the Aegean Sea.

Kavala is built on granite. In the country there are turf, iron
ore, hydrocarbon and marble deposits. The climate is
characterized between Mediterranean and Mid-European with mild
winters and warm, dry summers.
The maximum average monthly air temperature in July and August
is 26o c. The minimum monthly air temperature in January is 5,1o
c.
The average annual temperature is 15,4o c. The maximum rate of
rainfall is in November 77,9 mm. The minimum rate in August is
8,9 mm and the average annual rainfall rate is 540,5 mm. |
